Ooze respect for all the people that make the performance go off tight, which allows the art to move people...
I hope everyone who really rocks really gets paid. And laid.
I'm having a blast writing and recording my songs. I make trucker rock for me to listen to while I drive the nightshift. It helps me deal with the stress of traffic anxiety, and makes me laugh and stay awake. It's symbiotic, dude.
About:
Pretty much here to listen to the Bloody Worm album and say hi to Kris.
I've done local crew as rigging puller, and loader and ground rigging and plywood and lights b******* and just about everything else that requires a strong back and an ability to conquer the fatique and 'gig-butt' endemic of large shows. I have helped on security and sound for afterhours clubs and good 'ol rock bars. I have bartended at awesome sound venues. I have tossed hundreds of pounds of swag from my window. I have hung around studios and smoked cigarettes and eaten the bands' pizza.
Since 2001 I have managed over a half-million miles driving tractor/trailers all Can/USA, hauling beef, produce, and steel. For the first four years, I lived in my truck and drove eighteen hours a day, averaging 12,000 miles per month. Turns out, this kind of behaviour can make you retarded. However, as a sociologist and an artist, the chance to witness our continent through the whole pre- and post- 9/11 situation from behind the wheel of a Canadian truck was fantastic grist for the mill. I also lay the claim that I have listened to more radio than most, what with driving all day with a dog that doesn't talk much. Through that period, nothing compared to the CBC or Western Canadian Rock FM, like The Bear and The Fox. (American FM is BRUTAL, and they weren't licensing Canadian Sirius back then... I'm sure the drivers now are enjoying a much improved quality of life!!)
For the Vancouver people: Ever wonder who actually, physically, tore down The Town Pump? It was I! And why WOULDN'T we want to rip out all of the oak and brass and pool tables and ashtrays to make room for blue drywall and fuzzy exstasy furniture? I am sickened to think that in 5 short years, 66 Water Street went from a venue that hosted Soundgarden, to a place I wouldn't send a rat to patronize. I understand that music can be cyclic, but I still think that was a s*** idea. Please, somebody take that room back for Rock! Kudos to The Lamplighter and The Bourbon for making a go of it IN THE EXACT SAME BLOCK.
ATTENTION IMPRESSARIOS OF THE FUTURE: BUY THAT BUILDING AND SAVE GASTOWN IN ONE KILLER ROCK'N ROLL SWOOP, WHY DONTCHYA...?
The crowd needs a second here, to calm down...
I record songs at home, designing material on my own and then recording little demos on my own or with my close friends who actually show up and wanna hack it. One of the key concepts and goals of CHAINS is the recording of my musical buddies as they collaborate and/or perform on my songs. It's fun, because they usually make 'em better, and then I also benefit from having familiar voices to listen to on long truckdrives. Mr. Frank T. has been most generous in this regard, which is great, because he tends to know what he's doing, so I can relax and let him do his thing, and I can always rely on his honest and creative criticisms and invaluable information on recording ideas. Can't expect Frankie to do it all for me, though, so I have recently started work on a tune with Steph Reid, which is the first female voice I have tried to record, which is very interesting - Her voice is unike mine in many ways, so the sound combinations are new and odd and super.
I would hope, one day, to hear CHAINS as five instruments, three backup vox, and one or two lead voices. So I need a lot of material, a lot of desire, and a lot of talented people who wanna do it. (This is where the truckdriving skills of patience, concentration and not giving a f*ck what the bad drivers think comes in handy.) I'm still at the 'material' part, but things are coming along nicely. I am really in no rush to gather players until there is an abundance of tunes, ready to go.
I carry the weight of a thousand unborn songs, kind of like a big pregnant RockSpider.
CHAINS
I have made all of these recordings with first a Boss BR900 and now a BR1600. (I'll wait for a second for the pros to pick themselves up from the laughing floor). I have one microphone, and I play an Ibanez 'Artist' from the old jamspace days. It set me back a whopping $600 but it has almost paid for itself. You may notice that my music is not overly produced. I am of the belief that, until I can make a song sound cool in my home lab, there is very little point to the big 'ol room.
I an also continually impressed with the music scene from B.C. - most of the contacts I have made this year are based in British Columbia - sounds like a very cool place - I am planning a trip there during the Olympics - in fact I have - for quite some time now - perused B.C. facts and pix when I get a chance to - sounds like a great place to live - like the virtual 'heaven on earth' thing - Dave
Thanx for listening - I'll be adding another soon - Listened to your recommended posts - Like them for all the wrong reasons! You have a lot of technical expertise and musical talent - great riffs and vocals and a verry clean mix - but I embrace the beat and rhythm aspect of rock - sort of like ear candy for the soul - a solid flow of melody and rich mix - but it is this diversity that keeps this music(rocknroll) vital and I will continue to tune in to you dude - I'm a big fan and will listen to all of your posts over the next week or so - keep havin' fun and keep on rawkin' - Dave
Thanx for da comment - I'm tryin' - working on a new one now - gonna get a copy of Cubase with my stimulus check - try and 'pro' up my - self - stay chilly - l8tr
