In the spring of 1992, along with three of my friends, I made the epic 860 mile journey from my hometown, Edmonton, Alberta, to Bremerton Washington (Seattle) to see Lollapalooza '92. I was 18 years old at the time and going to see The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Ministry, Pearl Jam, Jim Rose Circus, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine etc. in Seattle was like going to Woodstock for us!
We could have just gone to the show in Vancouver the day before, but at that time it seemed worth it to make the extra effort to make it down to Washington State. At this time "Seattle Grunge Scene" was pretty much in it's heyday and we wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
It was a miracle that my '84 Mazda GLC made it there and back and I remember spending most of the show at the front, and in the "mosh pit" and having my mind totally blown by "the big rock show".
Now, almost twenty years later, having been a guitar tech for some pretty big bands over the last 10 years, I believe that show back in '92 might have been what subconsciously led me into this line of work! Sometimes when I look down from the stage and see a young kid having his "mind blown" watching the show, I realize that was once ME and chuckle to myself.
Having enlightened you with that little stroll down memory lane, you can understand how I was pretty excited to hear that Soundgarden will be reuniting this year after a twelve year hiatus. Soundgarden has always been one of my favorite bands and I never had the chance to see them again live after '92.
ps. I actually found some Soundgarden footage on Youtube from this show, and posted/featured it on the front page of roadiejobs.com
Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell released a statement from his Twitter account at 12 am Jan 1. 2010. and wrote, “The 12-year break is over and school is back in session, sign up now - Knights of the Soundtable ride again!” He then directs fans to website Soundgardenworld.com, which invites people to sign up for updates.
Given my luck, I will probably be out of town "working" and end up missing the shows in my area. Oh well.
